The 50th Anniversary of Mauritian Independence

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the members of the Canadian-Mauritian community on the 50th Anniversary of Mauritian Independence. Many Mauritians have made Canada their home in cities all across our country including Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. Mauritians are truly a part of the Canadian fabric and an important part of our society.

Since being as elected as Member of Parliament a little over two years ago, I have come to know the Mauritian community in Mississauga-Streetsville quite well. I have attended their Diwali and Independence Day celebrations every year. Every time I meet with the Mauritian community I am always blown away by their kindness and hospitality.

I believe that the most important part of my job as a Member of Parliament is to ensure that the voices of the residents in my community are heard and represented on Parliament Hill. When I noticed that there was not a Parliamentary Friendship group on Parliament Hill for Mauritius, I felt that I needed to take it upon myself to establish one. Not only to ensure that the Mauritian community in my riding had their voices heard, but to ensure that the Mauritian community across Canada will be properly represented within our government.

For me and our government, maintaining positive relations with Mauritius is important. Mauritius remains a leader in Africa on democracy, transparency, and stability, and is among our most like-minded partners in the continent. Our shared values are reflected in our common participation in various international fora, including the Commonwealth, La Francophonie and the United Nations within which we often cooperate. Our government is committed to supporting multilateral organizations, including our commitment to the International Criminal Court. Additionally, Mauritius remains one of the top business destinations in Africa and is characterized by sound business legislation.

It is for these reasons that I am hoping our two countries will continue to build on our economic and cultural people-to-people links and continue to nourish our invaluable relationship for the benefit of both Canada and Mauritius. I look forward to continuing working with the Mauritian community across Canada.
